Missy Gators wipe out Lady Waves Friday

NATCHEZ &8212; The Cathedral Lady Waves knew they would be in for a tough game as they welcomed the Vicksburg Missy Gators to Devereux Stadium Friday night, and they got all they wanted and more in a 13-0 loss.

Diari Gilliam and Holly Head each recorded hat tricks for Vicksburg, scoring three goals apiece. Jill Rush scored two goals for the Missy Gators.

Things could have been far worse for Cathedral were it not for an inspired performance from goalie Abby Brown, who recorded 15 saves while having shot after shot come her way all night.

Even opposing coach Kevin Manton was impressed with Brown&8217;s performance.

&8220;She saved them several times,&8221; Manton said. &8220;She stopped a lot of balls, but a lot of them we fired right at her.&8221;

Cathedral head coach David Gaud/ declined to comment.

Head began the scoring onslaught three minutes into the first half when she scored the first goal of the game. Gilliam scored 12 minutes later, and Head then scored on a perfectly-executed header three minutes later to give the Missy Gators a 3-0 lead.

While Manton acknowledged the 5A Missy Gators had quite the advantage over the 1A Lady Waves, he said playing a game is always better than practicing.

&8220;Any time you can play a game is good,&8221; he said. &8220;You learn a lot more in games than you do in practice. The girls like games better, too. I don&8217;t yell at them during games. I yell at them at practice.&8221;

Cathedral (0-2) will travel to Brookhaven today to participate in the district tournament.
