Vikings blast Bears in Ronnie Brown tourney

VIDALIA &8212; Gary Stewart, Quartrell Thomas and Brandon Hawkins combined to score 51 points as the Vidalia Vikings remained undefeated with a 76-53 win over the Block Bears Thursday night at the Ronnie Brown Memorial Basketball Tournament.

Stewart led all scorers with 23 points. Thomas had 15 points and Hawkins added 13 points for Vidalia (5-0), which advanced to the championship game in the boys bracket and will take on the Tensas-Ferriday winner Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Vidalia got off to a slow start offensively and led Block just 13-8 at the end of the first quarter. But the Vikings got things going in the second quarter and by halftime they had a 32-21 lead over the Bears.

The Vikings added to their lead by outscoring the Bears 22-16 in each of the final two quarters.

Jerome Jefferson led Block with 15 points and Tabrian Jefferson had 12 points.

Sicily Island girls 31, Vidalia 29 (OT)

VIDALIA &8212; In the first game of the day at the Ronnie Brown Memorial Basketball Tournament, the Lady Vikings were one quarter away from extending their winning streak to two games until the Lady Tigers rallied in the fourth quarter and won in overtime.

Thanks to a 10-2 advantage in the third quarter, Vidalia (1-4) took a 20-15 lead into the fourth quarter. However, Sicily Island force overtime by outscoring the Lady Vikings 12-7 and then outscored them 4-2 in the extra session to win the game.

Rachel Wagoner led Vidalia with nine points. Angelica Branson had 14 points to lead the Lady Tigers, who will take on Block today at 5 p.m.

In other tournament action, the Richwood Lady Rams defeated the Tensas High Lady Panthers 51-27 and the Tensas High Panthers defeated the Sicily Island Tigers 66-59.

Richwood will take on the Ferriday Lady Trojans today at 6:30 p.m. and the Panthers will take on the Trojans today at 8 p.m.

Cathedral boys 57, Monterey 45

MONTEREY &8212; Juan Gray scored a game-high 28 points as the Green Wave broke a tie game after one quarter of play with a big second quarter en route to a 12-point win over the Wolves Thursday night at the Monterey Tournament.

Cathedral (2-4) and Monterey were tied at 9-9 at the end of the first quarter, but the second quarter belonged to the Green Wave, who outscored the Wolves 17-6 to take a 26-15 lead.

Monterey cut the lead to eight points going into the fourth quarter, but could get no closer. Billy Metcalf led the Wolves with 10 points.

Cathedral continues play at the Monterey Tournament and will take on the Harrisonburg Bulldogs today at 5:15 p.m.

Monterey girls 39, Cathedral 25

MONTEREY, La. &8212; The Lady Green Wave had no answer for the Lady Wolves&8217; duo of Melissa Simpson and Crystal McMillin, who combined to score 27 points in the win at the Monterey Tournament.

Simpson finished with a game-high 14 points and McMillin chipped in with 13 points. Monterey took a slim 12-8 lead over Cathedral (0-6) after one quarter of play. The Lady Wolves put the game out of reach by outscoring the Lady Green Wave 10-5 in the second quarter.

Alex Nichols had five points to lead the Lady Green Wave, who will take on the Harrisonburg Lady Bulldogs today at 4 p.m.
