WINNSBORO — Services for Doris “Chick” Thornton, 71, of Newellton, who died Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Christian Fellowship Church with the Rev. George Ferrington and the Rev. Gene Brown officiating.

Burial will follow at Legion Memorial Cemetery in Newellton under the direction of Young’s Community Memorial Funeral Home, Winnsboro. Immediately after the burial, there will be a time of fellowship at the church.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the church.

Mrs. Thornton was born Aug. 23, 1935, in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of Martin Smith Appel and Florence Gertrude Hammonds Appel. She was a resident of Newellton, a homemaker, and a member of the Christian Fellowship Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, George Dudley “Doug” Thornton of Newellton; children, George Dudley “Dutch” Thornton III and wife, Jill, of Monterey, Arthur Ray “Butch” Thornton of Newellton, Debbie Karen Thibodeau and husband, John, of Morgan City, Vickie Lee Reynolds and husband, Hambone, of Monterey, Monty Douglass “Squirrel” Thornton and wife, Liz, of Winnsboro; brother, Marvin Charles Appel and wife, Ann, of Newellton; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be George “Bo” Thornton, Floyd Thornton, Dutch Thornton, Seth Thornton, Joshua Thornton and Sonny Etheridge.

Honorary pallbearers will be Darrell “Flip” Wilson and Mike “Yank” Ray.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made on Mrs. Thornton’s behalf to American Cancer Society.
