In a game Cathedral had to win to keep their division title hopes alive, the Green Wave rallied from a 2-0 deficit and defeated the North Pike Jaguars 4-3 Tuesday night at D’Evereaux Stadium in a Division 7-1A/2A/3A matchup.
John Paul Price scored two goals in the first 26 minutes of the game, the first on a breakaway in the first minute and the second in the 26th minute after he came out of a pack with the ball from 25 yards out and scored on a one-on-one with Cathedral goalkeeper Logan Brown.
“The shot went right through (Brown’s) hands,” Green Wave head coach Rick Freeman said of Price’s second goal.
At the 30th minute of the first half, John O’Beirne threaded a nice pass through the defense and to Eric Hollowell, who had no trouble putting the goal in the back of the net and just like that the Green Wave were back in the game trailing just 2-1.
Cathedral (4-2-1, 3-1) made it a 2-2 game at halftime when Hollowell’s crossing pass went to Hunter Foster, who scored when his kick went in on the left side of the goal at the 39th minute.
“We really moved the ball well,” Freeman said. “We started working on a new formation (Tuesday) and they seemed to have taken to it.”
After a scoreless second half, Price scored his third goal of the game at the seventh minute of the first overtime to give North Pike (2-1 in division play) a 3-2 lead, but Jesse Morrison forced the game to go to penalty kicks when he scored in the fourth minute of the second overtime.
Hollowell, Taylor Brantley, Curtis Maier, O’Beirne and Kris Griffiths each made their penalty kicks. Price, Will Covington and Drew Worthy each made their penalty kicks but Rodrigo Silva’s penalty kick was blocked by Brown and Griffiths won the game with his penalty kick.
