Trinity Saints win big despite heavy hearts

NATCHEZ &8212; Jon Davis King scored three seconds into the game on his way to 20 points &8212; all in the first half &8212; and the Trinity Episcopal Saints never looked back in a 58-12 win over the Tallulah Trojans Tuesday night at Trinity.

Playing in front of the home crowd for the first time since finishing football season, and also playing with heavy hearts after the death of Trinity supporter Barr Brown, the Saints were sloppy at times, but overcame it with an easy win.

&8220;I&8217;m glad we got the district win,&8221; said head coach David King, &8220;but my mind&8217;s on Barr.&8221;

The Saints sewed patches featuring the letter &8220;B&8221; in honor of Brown for the game.

The game slowed down for a bit early, as the Saints led 5-2 with 5:30 to go in the opening quarter, but then went on a 21-0 run over an eight-minute span to put the game away early.

With the win, the Saints improved to 1-1 on the young season.

Stevan Ridley and Matthew Freeman each scored nine for Trinity. Tallulah was led by Bones Halterman and Allen Grigsby, who each scored just four.

With just a week of play under their belts, the Saints, almost all of whom played football, put together a pretty impressive performance, but King said there is still plenty of room for improvement.

&8220;We&8217;ve had just three or four practices,&8221; he said. &8220;We were obviously very, very rusty. I was pleased with the way we played defense, holding these guys to just 12 points. That&8217;s pretty good. We&8217;ve got a long way to go, though. I found out I&8217;m going to have some depth, so that&8217;s a bright spot.&8221;

The Saints will next take on Chamberlain-Hunt Thursday at home at around 6:30 p.m.
