MONTEREY &8212; The Cathedral Green Wave were on their way to going 2-0 in the Monterey Tournament when Juan Gray went down with an ankle injury late in the fourth quarter.
With Gray out of the game and no one for Cathedral stepping up in his absence, the Harrisonburg Bulldogs took advantage in the final few minutes and rallied for a 51-46 win over the Green Wave Friday night at the Monterey Tournament.
&8220;We had the game,&8221; Green Wave head coach Peter Arnold said. &8220;We were up three with two and a half minutes to go and Juan injured his ankle. We let them off the hook. The came back and beat us.&8221;
Before the ankle injury, Gray, Cathedral&8217;s leading scorer, lit up Harrisonburg for a game-high 27 points and hit seven three-pointers.
&8220;He shot the ball well,&8221; Arnold said. &8220;We were relying so much on Juan to handle the ball. He went down and we couldn&8217;t make the plays to finish them off. Nobody else shot the ball particularly well.&8221;
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-7 lead after one quarter of play and then outscored the Green Wave by eight points in waning minutes of the game.
Arnold said he hopes that Gray won&8217;t be out for an extended period of time, but &8220;if not, everybody will have to pick up the slack.&8221;
