The Prairie View Lady Spartans knew they would be in for a battle with the ACCS Lady Rebels at the Bob Ulmer Gym in a key MPSA District 4-AA match-up Saturday afternoon.

Prairie View, ranked No. 5 in Class AA, also knew that the second meeting between the two teams wasn’t going to be as easy as it was when it took down ACCS by 17 points on Jan. 6.

And despite having starting point guard Caroline Oliphant held to just two field goals, the Lady Spartans still managed to hold on for a hard-fought 53-49 win over the Lady Rebels.

Ariana DeLaSalle led ACCS (23-6, 3-2) with a game-high 23 points and Katie Anne Swinny had 13 points.

“I don’t think we’re totally disappointed in the way we played,” Lady Rebels head coach Chuck Bauerle said. “I thought we defended them well. We had some lapses during the game and we didn’t execute.”

Two other things Bauerle said attributed to the game was his team not getting enough players involved on the offensive end and Prairie View’s free-throw shooting.

“We just couldn’t get over the hump and get everyone involved on offense,” Bauerle said. “They shot 26 free throws and missed just five. They scored 53 points and 21 of them were free throws. They just made them. They were aggressive.”

One thing Bauerle was pleased with was the play of reserve Chelsea Freeman, who came off the bench in the first half and again in the fourth quarter.

“She had three steals and a blocked shot and made a few baskets,” Bauerle said. “She did a good job for us.”

Oliphant scored nine of her 13 points at the free-throw line. Caroline Winnon led Prairie View (25-2, 5-0) with 17 points and Randi Farrar had 12 points. The Lady Spartans outscored the Lady Rebels in each of the first three quarters and had a 38-32 lead as the fourth quarter began.

ACCS cut the lead to two points with just 50 seconds left, but couldn’t get any closer.

In boys action, the Rebels fell 79-44 to

Yazoo County boys 49, Natchez High 44

TERRY — The Bulldogs got off to a good start against a Yazoo County team that had won just four of last 17 games after getting off to a 3-0 start. However, the Bulldogs couldn’t sustain that momentum and the Panthers eventually took a five-point win at the Metro Madness Classic at Terry High School.

Led by Kendall Logan and Jason Bruce, Natchez High (7-11) took a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and didn’t seem intimidated by a Yazoo County team that has a seven-footer in its lineup. Logan finished with 12 points and Bruce had 11 points.

But the Panthers’ trio of Reginald Gilbert, Ronnie Davis and Johnathan Ratliff, along with some tough defense, proved to be too much. Gilbert led all scorers with 17 points. Davis added 14 points and Ratliff chipped in with 12 points.

Yazoo County (8-13) outscored the Bulldogs 11-8 in the second quarter to trail by just one point, 22-21 at halftime. The Panthers then took the lead for good with an 11-4 advantage in the third quarter.

Chamberlain-Hunt boys 51, Tensas Academy 45

ST. JOSEPH — Chris Callahan finished with 16 points, Grant Godley scored 12 points and Kory White added 11 points as the Wildcats defeated the Chiefs in an MPSA District 7-A game Saturday afternoon.

Chamberlain-Hunt pretty much had its way with Tensas throughout the first three quarters as the Wildcats would end up taking a 40-26 lead by the time the third quarter was over and then held off a furious rally by the Chiefs in the fourth quarter.

Zach Jones scored a game-high 19 points and Hunter Hale had 13 points for Tensas (4-14, 1-5).

Bowling Green boys 51, Trinity Episcopal 43

NATCHEZ — Justin Daniel scored 14 points and Trevor Thomas had nine points to lead a balanced scoring attack as the Buccaneers used two big quarters to defeat the Saints Saturday night at Clyde Adams Gym

Bowling Green outscored Trinity, ranked No. 5 in Class A, 12-5 in the first quarter and 12-6 in the third quarter as the Buccaneers would take a 34-25 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Jon Davis King had 14 points and R.J. Fleming chipped in with nine points for Trinity (6-7), which was playing its second straight game without Stevan Ridley.

Bowling Green girls 39, Trinity Episcopal 20

NATCHEZ — It wasn’t that long ago that a Lady Saints team would hold opponents to anywhere between 20 and 30 points for an entire game and win by between 25 and 40 points.

But on Saturday afternoon on Trinity’s own court, it was the Lady Buccaneers who held the Lady Saints in check, especially the second quarter when the Lady Saints managed just two points.

Gabby Givens led Bowling Green with 13 points and Jessica Crowe scored nine points. Molly Butts led Trinity with eight points, but Eliza Jones was held to a mere two points.
