Police are investigating another juvenile who might have been involved in the creation of what police said were homemade bombs found in an Adams County house Jan. 21.
Vidalia Police Chief Billy Hammers said Friday his department had anther juvenile suspect that “might be in connection with making the bombs.” No further arrests have been made, he said.
A 16-year-old was arrested in Adams County on charges of making explosive devices Jan. 23 after four were found at his father’s residence, according to sheriff’s reports.
One device was reportedly placed in a book that had pages carved out to fit the device.
The boy was released to his parents’ custody that day.
Vidalia police later arrested the boy on similar charges and said the explosive devices were likely produced in Louisiana.
The Vidalia boy is being held at a juvenile facility in the Alexandria, La., area.
“Our investigation uncovered there were other people possibly involved in this,” Adams County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Maj. Jody Waldrop said Friday. “We uncovered at least two other individuals — juveniles.”
The explosive devices might have been intended to harm another person or property, Waldrop said Friday.
“When someone makes a book bomb, there had to be some intent to do something,” he said. “Otherwise, why put it in a book?”
Herbert Braswell, the boy’s grandfather, said the devices police called bombs were in fact small and not likely to seriously harm anyone.
“They have blown this thing out of proportion,” Braswell said. “There’s really no bombs. They’re firecrackers. It’s nothing to prosecute over.
“This kid can’t go to school, can’t see his mom. Adams County had no problem releasing him to his mother. He really doesn’t deserve it. He’s just a boy building firecrackers.”
A status hearing for the boy is set for Feb. 12.
