City Attorney Everett Sanders was in Washington, D.C., last weekend.
Sanders was at the Democratic National Committee conference as a representative for the state.
“I’m the national committeeman for the state of Mississippi for the Democratic National Committee,” Sanders said. “Representatives are elected from statewide. I’m in my third year.”
The conference was televised nationally.
The committee has periodic meetings between party conventions, he said, voting on policies for the party.
Four people represent Mississippi, Sanders said — the chairman, vice chair, a national committeewoman and a committeeman.
That’s how it works in most states, too, he said.
“What we do is represent Mississippi and issues the state party designs to have brought before the committee,” he said. “We would be spokespersons for that.”
The conference featured workshops and training for party officials, along with a number of discussions, Sanders said.
“The primary thing that occurred this time was all the presidential candidates who are running for the Democratic nomination came and spoke to us,” Sanders said. “We got a chance to visit with all of them.”
Sanders said he was impressed with all the candidates.
“We have some good candidates, and whoever ends up winning I think will have a very good shot at winning the presidency,” he said.
By far, the issue that dominated the conference was the Iraq war, he said.
“There was a resolution passed opposing the war,” he said. “I think that the war seemed to be an issue that predominated.”
