Betty Harrell

Services for Betty Jane Berryhill Harrell, formerly of Natchez, who died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, were held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, at Dantzler First United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Greer officiating.

Burial followed at Griffin Cemetery, in Moss Point, under the direction of Holder-Wells Funeral Home, Moss Point.

Mrs. Harrell was born Nov. 16, 1936, in Kentwood, La., the daughter of Ellis Eugene and Olive Maxine Moore Berryhill.

Mrs. Harrell graduated from Natchez High School in 1954, Hinds Junior College in Raymond in 1956 and the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg in 1958. She was a dedicated educator who taught at Moss Point High School, Pascagoula High School, night classes at Jackson County Junior College and West Elementary School in Moss Point. She retired from teaching in Dec. 1989, having taught for 27 years. She was an active member of Dantzler First United Methodist Church where she served in many areas. Mrs. Harrell was a member of the Jackson County Retired Teachers Association. In 1971 she was nominated for Jackson County’s Outstanding Young Educator. In 1958 she was named Jackson County’s Conservation Teacher of the Year and also in 1985, she received the Distinguished Service Award from the Jackson County Soil and Water Conservation District.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, William Talmadge Berryhill.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Charles J. Harrell of Moss Point; sons, Dr. Charles J. Harrell and wife, Ramona, of Petal, Christopher E. Harrell and wife, Megan, of Baton Rouge and Dr. Joseph C. Harrell and wife, Toni, of Gulf Shores, Ala.; a daughter, Chandra S. Harrell of Atlanta; five grandchildren, Matthew and Nathan Harrell of Petal, Chelsea and Kaleigh Harrell of Baton Rouge and Kori Harrell of Gulf Shores; a niece, Dannette Berryhill of Natchez; numerous other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were Pete Eldridge, Charles Barber, Johnny Grafe, Dennis Gandy, Joe Kinsey and Randy Williams.
