The Dart: Moody ebjoys being one-man daycare

Reginald Moody is not a stay-at-home dad. But he is a stay-at-home uncle.

Friday, Moody and his 2-year-old nephew, Jalin, went for a walk in the sunshine after staying in-doors from the cold these past few days.

“We’re trying to get a little sunlight while it’s warm,” Reginald said.

Reginald baby-sits for sister Shameaka at 104 South Hickory St., while she is at work, he said.

“You could say I’m a 27-year-old nanny,” Moody said.

Moody said he has only been babysitting for a few months.

Last July, Moody went to Nashville to visit his brother.

“I was going there for a visit and I enjoyed my visit so much I thought I’d stay,” he said.

Moody worked as a meter operator for Hollister Distributing Company.

In November Moody moved back to Vidalia.

“I just got tired of it,” he said. “I guess it just wasn’t the right spot for me.”

Moody said he voluntarily baby-sits for his sister in January.

“I enjoy my family,” he said. “I don’t charge her because I love my sister and I’m here whenever she needs me.”

While he and Jalin are waiting for mom to get home, duties for Moody include making sure he eats three times a day and takes his nap after lunch, Moody said.

“I treat him like any daycare would,” he said.

When the weather is nice, Moody said he and Jalin will play basketball outside or wait until Jalin’s cousin comes home from school and play football.

Cold days are different.

“There’s really not much you can do except sit in the house and try to enjoy what’s on television,” Moody said.

Although he enjoys spending the day with his nephew, Moody said it’s not an easy job.

“He really works me,” he said.

“He’s just like a nine-to-five job.”
