Monterey blasts Cathedral

The Monterey Lady Wolves officially started their season a week ago and had already played nearly a handful of games. The Cathedral Lady Green Wave started its season Tuesday afternoon against, yes, the Lady Wolves.

And what was a close game for a few innings turned out to be just the opposite as Monterey defeated Cathedral 17-4 in four innings Tuesday night at Liberty Park.

After three innings it was still anyone’s ball game as the Lady Wolves led 7-4. But any thoughts of a Cathedral win ended quickly.

Monterey (1-4) put the game away with 10 runs in the top of the fourth inning. The big hits were off the bats of Ellen Bairnsfather, who had a three-run triple, and Brooke Baker, who had a two-run double.

JONESVILLE — The Lady Bears broke a 1-1 tie after three and a half innings by scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth as they ended up 10-run ruling the visiting Lady Bears in six innings.

Block (2-1) led 9-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. After the host Lady Bears plated one run to make it a 10-1 game, Ashley Kirby ended the game with a two-run home run that went out of the ballpark.

Kirby finished 3-for-4 and also scored three runs. Sarah McEntyre went 1-for-1,walked twice and scored a pair of runs for Block. Soni Manning had an RBI triple during the Lady Bears’ scoring outburst in the bottom of the fourth.

Even though Block committed six errors, winning pitcher Misty Davis more than made up for that by allowing just one run on one hit.
