A big second inning for Cathedral High School and a strong outing by Green Wave pitcher Patrick McDonough helped Cathedral pick up the 5-1 victory against rival St. Aloysius Monday night at Chester Willis field.

Cathedral trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning after Pierson Waring singled to drive in Jordan Muirhead in the top of the first inning. But the Green Wave evened things up in the bottom of the second inning when David Ozburn singled to score Preston Edwards. On the same play, left fielder Marsh Willis bobbled the ball and Kole Junkin scored to give Cathedral a 2-1 lead. Two batters later, Blasé Bradford singled to shallow right field to score Ozburn. The Green Wave tacked on one more run when Jesse Morrison singled to right field to drive in Bradford to give Cathedral a 4-1 lead

“The second inning was big for us, we put four on the board,” said Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley.

“We made a couple of errors in the second inning and they got a couple of Texas League hits on us, but the bottom line was we did not show up to play,” said St. Aloysius head coach Clint Wilkerson.

After the second inning, the Green Wave scored one more run in the bottom of the third inning when Junkin doubled to score Edwards and give the Green Wave a 5-1 lead over the Flashes.

Mean while on defense, Patrick McDonough kept St. Aloysius in check on the mound by throwing a complete game, and in the process collected 11 strike outs, gave up three hits and allowed one walk.

“Patrick kept them (St. Aloysius) off balance. It looked like they were picking up on his curve ball early, so we switched things up,” Beesley said.

Ryno Martin-ez took the loss for the flashes. Martin-ez pitched a complete game, and struck out five batters, but he also gave up seven hits and two walks.

“Cathedral did a good job of getting the ball into play,” Wilkerson said. “We didn’t hit the baseball well, and that’s what it boils down to.”

With the win, the Green Wave improves to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in district, while St. Aloysius falls to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in district with the loss. Cathedral will next take on West Feliciana in the Vidalia Classic on Thursday at 5 p.m. St. Aloysius will next face West Lincoln on Friday.
