In one of the wildest fast-pitch softball games in recent memory, the Cathedral Lady Green Wave rallied from an 8-5 deficit to defeat the Natchez High Lady Bulldogs 21-11 Tuesday night at the Natchez-Adams Girls Softball Complex.
Even though both teams combined to score 32 runs, there were only 14 total hits – nine by Cathedral and five by Natchez High. That’s mostly because there were quite a few walks.
“They walked a total of 17 batters. They had two pitchers,” Cathedral assistant coach Penny Daggett said. “We walked 12 batters. We had three pitchers.”
Natchez High jumped out to a 6-0 lead when the top of the first inning was over, but Cathedral (2-5) responded by scoring five runs in the bottom of the first to trail by just one run.
The Lady Bulldogs then scored two runs in the top of the second to lead 8-5. The Lady Green Wave had two runners on base, but both were thrown out and it appeared the Lady Bulldogs were going to get out of the bottom of the second without giving up a run.
That’s when the floodgates opened for Cathedral as they took advantage of several walks as well as RBI singles by Melissa Cavin and Anna Huffines to score 10 runs and take a 15-8 lead.
“Melissa singled and drove in Joanna Waller to make it 8-8. Julia Stevens walked to score Zoie Arnold to make it 9-8,” Daggett said.
Winning pitcher Kalin Kirkwood struck out five while losing pitcher Triyonna Green struck out three.
Natchez High scored three runs in the top of the third inning and was still in trailing 15-11. But the Lady Bulldogs were unable to score in the final two innings while Cathedral scored two runs in the bottom of the third and four in the bottom of the fourth.
