Natchez resident William “Willie” Turner’s death was the result of a misunderstanding, his fiancé, Tonya Dawson, said Thursday.

Dawson’s father, Anthony “Tony” Eugene Dawson, 59, allegedly shot and killed Turner at the couple’s house Tuesday evening. Sheriff’s officials have recently said Turners death might have been the result of a longstanding argument.

“He and my dad did not have an ongoing dispute,” Tonya Dawson said Thursday. “William thought the world of Daddy.”

Dawson said her father and Turner were sitting, talking and drinking Tuesday.

“It was a misunderstanding,” Dawson said. “My daddy thought me and William were arguing, but we weren’t, we were sitting here talking. Daddy just all of a sudden snapped, I guess.”

Adams County Sheriff Ronny Brown said Tuesday that they waited to charge Anthony Dawson until Wednesday because he was too intoxicated to talk with them.

Turner was born in Pineville, La., and had lived in Vidalia and Houma, among other places, Tonya Dawson said. He had lived in Natchez for eight years, and the couple had three children, ages 8, 6 and 3.

Dawson said she thought Turner would want to be remembered as a good father.

“He was Superdad,” she said. “He loved life, he loved his friends and he loved his babies. These babies were his life. He called them his angels.”

Recently, Turner had been helping his oldest son, Jared, work on his bicycle to fix the chain.

“Now, Jared’s not letting anybody touch that bicycle,” Dawson said. “He’s been out here all morning trying to fix it. It’s just sad. These babies are the ones who suffer.”

Dawson said Turner’s absence hit the family hard.

“He was my life. Other than my babies, he was my life,” she said. “He was my backbone. He held me together.”

Anthony Dawson was arraigned Wednesday on charges of murder and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. His total bond was set at $200,000. Dawson was still being held in Adams County jail Thursday evening.
