LaSalle beats Block with big sixth inning

What had been a good softball game for five innings between LaSalle and Block abruptly came to an end when the Lady Tigers struck for six runs in the top of the sixth inning in a 9-3 win Thursday afternoon.

In the District 3-1A opener for both teams, the Lady Bears were the ones to fall apart at the worst possible time. They committed all four of their errors in the top of the sixth while losing pitcher Misty Davis gave up five hits.

“In the fourth inning, they had six hits but we gave up just three runs,” Lady Bears head coach Kerry Kirby said. “But they came back in the sixth inning.”

But the momentum appeared to change in LaSalle’s direction when it took a 3-0 lead when the top of the fourth came to an end. However, Megan McMillin hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth as Block was down just 3-2.

At that point, the outcome was still in doubt. And it still was after a scoreless fifth inning. But timely hitting by the Lady Tigers combined with untimely errors by the Lady Bears changed all of that.

Johnson held Block to just five hits and had a key RBI double during LaSalle’s six-run rally. M. Brown went 3-for-5 and C. Tant was 3-for-4 to lead LaSalle’s 13-hit attack.

MONTEREY — What was a close game through six innings ended up being a rout as the Lady Bulldogs scored eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat the Lady Wolves Thursday afternoon.

“We played a very good six-inning game,” Monterey head coach Hazel Brallier said.

The Lady Wolves (2-8) may have played well during the first six innings as far as defense as pitching were concerned, but their hitting was just the opposite.

Monterey’s only run of the game was in the bottom of the second inning. And much of its offense was from losing pitcher Holli Clay, who went 2-for-3 with a double. The rest of the team had two total hits.

Harrisonburg finally broke through and took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Lady Bulldogs got a solid performance from K. Johnson, who pitched all seven innings. She struck out eight and walked one in earning the win.

Johnson also helped her cause by going 3-for-4 with a double and Griffin was 2-for-4.
