Franklin County led Wesson 3-2 after five innings and then the Bulldogs’ offense took over to the tune of eight runs in the top of the sixth inning as they defeated the Cobras 13-4 Saturday afternoon.
The game was originally scheduled to start at 7 p.m., but with spring break around the corner, it was moved to a 1 p.m. start. And perhaps that was one reason why the game was still in doubt through the first five innings.
Wesson took a 1-0 lead at the end of the first inning until Franklin County (6-6) took the lead with two runs in the top of the second. The Cobras answered with a run in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at 2-2. That would be the last tie of the game.
The Bulldogs took the lead for good with one run in the top of the fourth and then put the game out of reach with their big scoring barrage two innings later. The Cobras cut the lead to 11-4 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but that would be as close as they would get.
Ben McDowell was the winning pitcher and he went 2-for-4 with a double at the plate. Ryan Ratcliff was 4-for-4 as Franklin County ended up with 15 hits. The win was the Bulldogs’ third in a row after losing at Natchez High 16-15 on March 2.
