Block Lady Bears capitalize on St. Mary’s errors

One team’s misfortune turned into another team’s triumph. That’s probably how St. Mary’s and Block felt about the turn of events in the top of the fifth inning of their District 3-1A game Monday afternoon.
Mika Bennett walked with one out and then the next batter for Block struck out. In a strange turn of events, the Lady Tigers thought the inning was over and they were headed for the dugout.
However, Bennett knew the situation and she took off from first to third base. St. Mary’s lapse in concentration resulted in two errors, which allowed Bennett to score what ended up being the deciding run as the Lady Bears took a 2-1 win.
What perhaps was the biggest surprise of the game was the fact that even though there was little in the way of scoring, both teams combined to commit nine errors – five by St. Mary’s (7-8, 1-1) and four by Block.
Block (6-9, 1-1) scored the game’s first run when Abby Reeves reached first base on a fielder’s choice, advanced on a bunt single by winning pitcher Misty Davis and scored on back-to-back wild pitches by losing pitcher Morgan Vienne.
It was a tough loss for not only the Lady Tigers as a team, but Vienne, who struck out nine Block batters and walked two in seven innings. Davis struck out two and walked two in a complete-game win.
Nikki Bolton scored St. Mary’s only run in the bottom of the fourth when she doubled, stole third and came in on Trish Dlyet’s single up the middle.
