Vidalia Vikings defeat Block Bears

Despite being out-hit 11 to seven, the Vidalia Vikings took advantage of six Block errors – four of them in one inning – to defeat the Bears 7-3 Monday afternoon.

Vidalia scored three runs in the top of the first inning on just one hit. But Block hurt itself with those four errors and a couple of passed balls – much to the dismay of Bears head coach Scott Green.

“Five of their seven runs were the result of errors,” Green said. “We had the plan to change pitchers every two innings.”

Nick Coley led Vidalia at the plate by going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in. Winning pitcher Trey Brasher went the distance and struck out six Block batters – most of those when the Bears had a chance to put runs on the board.

John Davis threw a lot of strikes but the defense behind him let him down in the first inning. Davis threw a scoreless second inning and held Vidalia to just two hits in two innings.

Casey Ryan, who was charged with the loss, pitched brilliantly in the middle three innings of the game as held allowed just one run on one hit. However, the one run Vidalia scored off of Ryan in the top of the third inning gave the Vikings a 4-1 lead.

Block also hurt its chances of winning the game by leaving five runners in scoring position. The Bears scored one run in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Evan White and two runs in the bottom of the third to trail by just one run, 4-3.

The scored remained that way until the top of the seventh inning, when Vidalia (10-5) got four hits off Block pitcher Justin Winborne, who also led Block’s offense by going 3-for-4 with an RBI.

“He had a really good sixth inning,” Green said of Winborne. “He had his fastball working and he threw strikes. Then the umpire decides not to call those same pitches strikes in the seventh, so he basically had to throw it over the plate. We did a pretty good job keeping them off the bases and the umpire decides to make the strike zone the size of a Dixie cup.”

Despite what happened with the size of the strike zone in the top of the seventh, Green gave credit to Vidalia for getting the hits when it mattered.

ACCS wins two close games at Parklane Tournament

MCCOMB — The ACCS Rebels needed RBI singles in the bottom of the seventh inning to win both of their games Monday at the Parklane Tournament. ACCS first defeated Brookhaven Academy 6-5 and then got by Central Homes 8-7.

In the first game, the Cougars tied the game at 5-5 with one run in the top of the seventh. Then in the bottom of the seventh, Eric Perry got on base and Bryce Murray entered the game as the pinch runner. Then Hunter Russ singled to bring in Murray for the game-winning run.

Brookhaven Academy took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning before ACCS answered with four runs of its own in the bottom of the second. Both teams then scored one run in the fourth inning.

Brian Sanderson had the key hit for the Rebels in the bottom of the second with a single that brought in Britton McCall and winning pitcher Josh Calcote, who went 2-for-2. Luke Brumfield had two RBIs, including a double that scored Calcote, who led off the bottom of the fourth with a single.

Colin Dollar pitched the first five innings for ACCS before being relieved by Calcote.

In the second game, McCall led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and Corey Emanual pinched-ran for McCall. Calcote then bunted Emanuel to second and Ryan Comer singled to right field on the first pitch he saw from losing pitcher John Hays to bring in Emanuel.

ACCS (4-5) appeared to have control of the game after jumping out to a 5-0 lead at the end of the second inning. But the Trojans rallied with four runs in the top of the fourth, two in the top of the fifth and one in the top of the sixth to take a 7-5 lead.

But the Rebels didn’t panic. Austin Weeks, who went 2-for-4, hit a big two-out single to score Brumfield and Sanderson that tied the game at 7-7. Brumfield also went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Calcote, who gave up one run in the sixth, got the first out in the top of the seventh before being relieved by Brumfield, who retired the final two Trojans batters to keep the game tied at 7-7. Dustin Carroll gave up no runs in the first three innings before being roughed up in the fourth and fifth innings.

ACCS is scheduled to play Simpson Academy Wednesday at 12:15 at the Parklane Tournament – weather permitting.
