It was not a good day at all for the Block Bears as they lost to the co-host Caldwell Parish Spartans 11-1 in five innings and then were defeated by the Mangham Dragons 12-5 Friday afternoon at Caldwell Parish High School.
In the first game, Caldwell Parish managed just five hits, but Block walked eight batters and committed five errors. The Bears themselves were only able to get three hits, yet two of them were doubles – one by Evan White and the other by Casey Ryan.
“Seven of their 11 runs were the result of errors in the outfield,” Bears head coach Scott Green said. “Three dropped fly balls and one misplayed ground ball in the outfield.”
The Spartans scored five runs in the bottom of the second and six in the bottom of the fourth.
The second game actually went all seven innings even though Mangham jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings of play. Block (5-7) tried to get back in the game as it scored three runs in the top of the third, but the Dragons wouldn’t let the Bears get any closer.
Justin Winborne had a gallant effort on the mound in a complete-game performance as he struck out 11 and walked five, but once again the defense let the Bears down with five errors.
Mangham’s Michael Everitt went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and scored two runs. The Dragons finished with seven hits. Dustin Winborne led Block (5-7) as he was 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Block will take on co-host LaSalle at 2 p.m. at the LaSalle/Caldwell Round Robin.
