Herbert Hicks

Herbert Hollis Hicks, MD, died at the age of 77, March 15, 2007 at University Medical Center in Jackson after a short illness.
He was born Dec. 13, 1929, in Calhoun City, the son of George and Ella Hicks.
Dr. Hicks received his BA from Harvard College and his MD from George Washington University Medical School. He completed an Internship at Emergency Hospital in Washington, D.C., and medical residencies in Denver, Colo. and Jackson.
A war veteran, Dr. Hicks served as a physician in the US Navy from 1956 to 1958 and in the US Naval Reserves from 1968 to 1991. As a reservist, he was called back to active duty in 1990 during Operation Desert Storm. Dr. Hicks retired with the rank of Captain. Dr. Hicks began his family practice in Natchez in 1960 and retired due to health reasons in 1998. He also served as a member of the faculty of University of Wisconsin Medical School from 1973 to 1974, instructing family practice residents in rural medicine.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Heida Engel Hicks; one daughter, Elisabeth Blaney and her three children, Emily, Chad and Wesley Blaney; son Christian Hicks and wife, Yukiko, and their two daughters, Maiko and Hanako Yamagata-Hicks of Japan; son Steven Hicks and wife, Kathy, of Huntsville, Ala. and their two sons, Andrew and Ryan; sons George E. Hicks of New York City and Zachary, of Buffalo, Miss.
Dr. Hicks will be missed by family, friends and patients. According to Dr. Hicks’ wishes, his body will be donated for medical science at University Medical Center in Jackson. A memorial service is being planned and will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Natchez Humane Society or the Stewpot.
