Multiple fielding errors by the Saints and a triple play late in the game helped Centreville Academy close out an 8-6 victory over Trinity Episcopal at Chester Willis Field Saturday afternoon.

After trailing most of the game, the Tigers (3-6) took the lead in the top of the sixth inning by scoring four runs off two hits and six errors. In the bottom of the sixth, Trinity (3-4, 1-1) had no outs and the go ahead run at the plate, when Matthew Freeman hit into a 5-4-3 triple play that quashed the Saints’ rally.

“Routine plays are routine plays. And if you don’t make routine plays, you can’t win ball games,” Saints head coach Matt Mason said.

Prior to their sixth inning defensive meltdown, the Saints enjoyed an early lead by scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Centreville tied things at 4-4 in the top of the fifth inning, but the Saints scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to regain a 6-4 lead. But it was not enough, and the Saints could not sustain the Tigers’ sixth inning rally.

Despite the multiple errors committed by the Saints, Centreville head coach Jason Horne said the key to the Tigers’ victory was Kyle Brown, who pitched a complete game.

He also said the Tigers’ batting performance improved. Until Saturday’s game, Horne said Centreville as a team had been struggling at the plate.

Matthew Freeman started on the mound for Trinity, but was relieved by Kolby Godfrey in the top of the sixth inning with the game tied 6-6, and Trinity one out away from ending the Tigers’ at bat.

The Saints will have little time to regroup before taking on Franklin on Monday.

Mason said to turn things around, the Saints have several things to overcome.

“We must make routine plays and score when we have runners on base,” he said.

The Tigers, who finished second in district last season, will begin their district schedule on Tuesday against Sillman.
