A three-run error in the second inning and two straight errors in the sixth helped propel Vidalia to a 12-2, mercy rule-win over Monterey Tuesday.

After spotting Monterey a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Lady Vikings tied things up in the second with an RBI single by Tori Lemoine, who drove in Eryn Secrest.

With runners on first and second, Erika Brown came to the plate, and a throwing error on pitcher Holli Clay, followed by another throwing error on right fielder Brooke Baker allowed Brown to round the bases, scoring three runs to give Vidalia a 4-1 lead.

The sixth inning would prove disastrous for the Lady Wolves, as the Lady Vikings (12-7) scored seven runs — largely aided by two consecutive errors to start the inning and pinch hit, RBI singles by Kassi Randall and Claire Roberts. A bases-clearing double by Ashley Fuqua scored three runs to invoke the mercy rule and end the game.

Monterey (2-13) would commit six errors on the day.

“Errors hurt big-time,” Monterey coach Hazel Brallier said. “We’re young, though. We’ve only got two seniors and juniors. The next couple years will be a different story.”

Even with the win, Vidalia head coach Jeannie Hall wasn’t particularly happy with her team’s performance.

“We played sloppy,” she said. “I want the girls to know they’ve got to play better than they did today. We’re going to continue working hard. I was proud of (Randall and Roberts) for coming off the bench and executing hits and getting runs across. I was proud they were able to come off the bench and do that.”

Brittany Whittington picked up the win for Vidalia, pitching six innings and striking out six.

Clay took the loss for Monterey, pitching four innings before being relieved in favor of seventh-grader Ellen Bairnsfather. Clay would return to the mound in the sixth inning.

Lemoine led Vidalia at the plate, batting 3-for-3 with one RBI. Fuqua was 1-for-4 with a double and three RBI, and Mallory Guidroz was 2-for-3 with a stolen base.

Bairnsfather was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored for Monterey. Clay batted 1-for-3 with a double.
