A sacrifice bunt by Kole Junkin scored Patrick McDonough in the fourth inning to give Cathedral its first lead, and an eventual 2-1 win over Vidalia Friday night.

In a pitcher’s duel, Cathedral’s Preston Edwards and Vidalia’s Will Thomas combined for 15 strikeouts — six for Edwards and nine for Thomas.

The Green Wave picked up only three hits on the night, but were able to manufacture runs.

“We knew Will (Thomas) would pitch a good game,” Cathedral (12-4) coach Craig Beesley said. “He was probably throwing 85-87 the whole night, so we knew when we got guys on we’d have to move them over. We executed two straight bunts and they both worked.”

Vidalia (12-8) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Edwards walked three straight Viking batters. Trey Brasher scored Nick Coley on a fielder’s choice.

After that, Edwards settled in.

“Preston pitched a good game,” Beesley said. “He struggled at first, but he came around after that.”

McDonough pitched the final inning and two-thirds to pick up the save.

Brasher pitched the sixth inning for the Vikings.

Vidalia head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said the game was emblematic of his team’s entire season.

“It was the same song on a different day,” Hoffpauir said. “We left eight runners in scoring position, five of them with less than two outs. This team doesn’t have that killer instinct at the plate.”

Cathedral tied the game at 1 in the third inning when Jesse Morrison doubled to score Braxton Fondren. Morrison was thrown out in a rundown after being caught between second and third.

Shayne Knapp and Thomas had doubles for Vidalia.

Hoffpauir told his team following the game that a new season will begin today.

“We have battled for four weeks,” he said. “We’ve battled adversity, we’ve battled injuries and we’ve battled lots of things. It’s time to quit making excuses and start playing ball.”
