Trinity Episcopal scored six runs in the second inning and seven runs in the fourth to defeat the Tensas Academy Chiefs 17-1 on the road Friday afternoon.

Taylor Hinson got things started in the top of the second when his single scored Blaine Misita. Clint Easom doubled to score another run, and Matthew Freeman hit a ground rule double to score Kyle Ketchings. A Matt Barnes double that scored Jeremy Waldrop and Freeman capped off the top of the inning.

“The key for us was we swung the bats well,” Trinity head coach Matt Mason said. “I am pleased we stayed focused and got the district win.”

The Saints (4-5, 2-1) continued to put runs on the board in the third inning when they scored three runs, but the game was put away in the top of the fourth. After scoring three runs to lead 13-1 over Tensas (1-8, 0-4), Waldrop singled to score two runs, and Freeman homered to score Waldrop.

“We struggled more today in the field than we have in the past few weeks,” Chiefs head coach Taylor Grayson said.

He said Trinity had a good hitting club, and said his young team had trouble compensating for the experience.

“When you are facing a team like Trinity with several ninth-graders, intimidation is a factor,” he said.

The Chiefs’ lone run came in the bottom of the first inning when Zach Jones hit a solo home run to tie the game at one. That was as close as Tensas came to the Saints during the rest of the contest. The Chiefs’ only other hit of the ballgame came off of a single by Justin Fuller in the bottom of the fourth.

Trinity had 14 hits total in the game, with six Saints acquiring multiple hits.

Freeman picked up the win on the mound for the Saints, while Fuller took the loss for the Chiefs.

Trinity will next face Central Private on the road today, with the junior varsity taking the field 1 p.m. and the varsity at 3 p.m.

“They are one of the top teams in the league. It is good to play teams like that heading into district,” Mason said.

The Saints will face district foe WCCA on the road Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Tensas will next face Claiborne on Monday on the road at 3:30 p.m. The Chiefs won the first meeting between these the two in their first game of the season.
