Block falls to Kilbourne in tournament final

After defeating the host Harrisonburg Lady Bulldogs 10-2, the Block Lady Bears lost to the Kilbourne Lady Hawks 4-1 in the championship game of the Harrisonburg Tournament.

In the championship game, Kilbourne pitcher Logan Whittington held Block (9-9) to one run on just five hits. Block’s only run was in the top of the third inning, which tied the game at 1-1.

Whittington’s strong performance on the mound made up for four errors committed by the Lady Hawks.

Kilbourne then scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth and added a run in the bottom of the fifth and again in the bottom of the sixth. Whittington helped her cause by going 2-for-3, as did C. Brooks.

Block got to the championship game with an 11-hit attack against Harrisonburg pitching. The Lady Bears scored four runs in the top of the third inning and five more in the top of the fifth.

Winning pitcher Misty Davis held Harrisonburg to just three hits. Ashley Kirby led Block at the plate by going 2-for-3 with two doubles.

Even though Monterey went 1-2 Saturday in the tournament, head coach Hazel Brallier was please with the team’s performance. Both losses were by one run to a pair of good teams.

The Lady Wolves lost to Harrisonburg 3-2 in a game that went to the international tiebreaker. Monterey scored one run in the top of the sixth, but Harrisonburg won the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

In its second game of the day, Monterey defeated the Grace Christian Lady Warriors1-0. Holly Clay was the winning pitcher for the Lady Wolves, who were out-hit three to two but took advantage of four errors.

Monterey’s third game of the day ended in a 2-1 loss to the Vidalia Lady Vikings. Brittany Whittington held the Lady Wolves to just two hits in the game and Vidalia (13-8) got six hits off Clay. Vidalia scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
