Led by Landon White and Jon Lipsey, the Monterey Wolves rolled to a 14-4 win over the Kilbourne Hawks Monday afternoon in an important District 3-B game for both teams.

With the win, Monterey finished in second place in District 3-B with a 4-2 record and will take on either Castor or Weston in the first round of the Class B state playoffs later this month.

White went 3-for-4 with a double — Monterey’s only extra-base hit of the game — and Jon Lipsey was 2-for-3 as the Wolves ended up with 12 hits.

Trey King wound up being the winning pitcher, but he was not in line for the win until Monterey scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 6-2 lead.

After the Hawks scored two runs in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to two runs, the Wolves put the game out of reach with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth and then ended the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Losing pitcher A.J. Hill went 2-for-3 and L. House was 3-for-3 for Kilbourne, which finished third in district play at 2-4.

St. Mary’s 6, Block 2

NATCHITOCHES, La. — Having already clinched the District 3-1A championship, St. Mary’s needed a win over Block to finish undefeated in district play.

And that’s exactly what the Tigers did thanks to outstanding defense and a clutch hit in the first inning by Chris Berry as they defeated the Bears Monday afternoon.

“We hit every ball right at them today,” Block head coach Scott Green said. “They turned a double play to end the first four innings. That demoralized us. Give them credit. They made the plays.”

Block (10-13, 4-3) had at least two runners on base in each of the first four innings, but the Bears couldn’t take advantage of the situation with a key base hit when they needed it.

Jarred Roge’ was the winning pitcher for St. Mary’s (19-6, 10-0) despite walking six and giving up five hits while striking out only two in seven innings. The defense behind him had a lot to do with getting him out of several jams.

In the bottom of the first inning, St. Mary’s had two on thanks to a couple of walks by Block starting pitcher Justin Winborne and two outs when Berry singled down the third-base line to score both runners. At the end of the first inning, the Tigers had a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers then scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 6-0 game. Tyler Megson went 2-for-4 and Roge’ helped his own cause by going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Justin Winborne went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Dustin Winborne was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Justin Winborne took the loss as he went three innings, giving up three runs on three hits and four walks while striking out four.
