The Dart: Library to provide summer getaway

The warm days of summer are fast approaching. That’s why Natchez resident Lisa Ferrington and her son, Noah, are making a habit of visiting Vidalia’s new library.
In the cool, quiet rooms lined with books, Noah, 6, headed straight for the children’s room.
Even though this was just their second time in the library, he had scoped out his favorite section. That meant books with spiders, cars and skeletons on their covers.
“My favorite is Spiderman,” Noah said, stopping just long enough to flash the cover of a new book before he was off again to find more.
Ferrington said she and Noah just got Vidalia library cards.
“I thought it was something for him to do during the summer,” Ferrington said. “It will help with his reading, help him in school, and it will be something to keep him busy.”
Library programs featuring storytellers, magicians and puppeteers all summer long should do the trick.
Although they live in Natchez, Noah attends school in Vidalia, and the Vidalia library is convenient.
Ferrington said she hoped to keep Noah enthusiastic about reading.
“We try to read right before bed every night,” Ferrington said. “I want him to have a love for reading. I don’t want him to be a kid who sits in front of the TV all the time.”
Ferrington’s own love of reading was born early, when her parents read to her as a child, she said. And the passion has stuck.
“I like just about anything, as long as it has adventure in it,” she said. “I don’t get out of town much, so I guess it’s a way of traveling for me.”
Already, Noah shows enthusiasm for reading, she said. He tries to read to her and sounds out words.
“We’ll be driving down the road, and he’ll see signs and try to sound things out,” she said. “He gets excited when he can spell his name with the letters. He loves words, so I thought a library card would be good for him.”
