Vikings tuning up for playoffs

Vidalia picked up its 20th win of the season against Bethany Christian on Saturday, winning 11-1 in five innings.
This is the 11th time in 12 years Vidalia (20-10) has had at least a 20-win season.
Vidalia will try for No. 21 on the road today against Caldwell.
“This will be a final tune-up before the playoffs,” Vidalia head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said.
The Vikings will hopefully know on Tuesday who they will be facing in the first round of playoffs. Hoffpauir said Vidalia will host a wildcard team in the opening round, and if the Vikings win, they will likely be playing a district champion from the Baton Rouge area. The Vikings could even host that game.
The Louisiana high school baseball playoffs consist of 32 teams in a single elimination tournament. And since Hoffpauir believes baseball is a game of series, he prefers the series format. Single elimination doesn’t do the sport justice, he said.
“Only in Louisiana are things totally screwed up,” he said.
To win a state baseball championship, Hoffpauir said, it takes skill and luck because one off day in the field or at the plate for a team could result in the team being knocked out of contention. He added that travel distance and weather only increase those chances of a possible off day.
“With the playoffs like this, it has helped us before and it has killed us before,” Hoffpauir said.
