VIDALIA — The Vidalia ballpark — considered by some to be a hub of community activity — was vandalized twice last week.

“For the town of Vidalia, this is the place to come,” said Greg Young, president of the Girls’ Softball League.

The two incidents occurred on April 15 and last Friday.

On April 15, vandals pushed in an air conditioning unit mounted on a wall of the ballpark’s concession stand, and then entered the building through the hole, said Gloria Simmons, secretary-treasurer of the Girls’ Softball League.

The air conditioner fell on and crushed a bicycle a ballpark employee was storing in the building, she said.

The air conditioner unit was the only available point of entry into the building, because bars were added to its windows and doors after a vandalism several years ago, Simmons said.

Some money was taken, she said.

“This was a random thing, because we do not normally leave money in the concession stand,” Simmons said. “They just lucked up.

“They won’t ever luck up again.”

After the April 15 incident, it was decided to mount a cage around the air conditioning unit, but vandals struck again on Friday before it could be done, Simmons said.

After both incidents, $200 worth of damage was done to the air conditioning unit, she said.

“It’s a hothouse in the concession stand without (the unit),” she said.

That someone would vandalize the ballpark is a shame, she said.

“This is non-profit,” she said. “All our money turns over for children.”
