Fred Prater

Services for Fred Prater, 76, of Greenwood, formerly of Natchez, who died Friday, May 11, 2007, will be 11 a.m. today at McKinney Chapel with the Rev. Jessie Payne officiating.

Burial will be Monday, May 21, 2007, at Natchez National Cemetery under the direction of Sanders and Sanders Funeral Home, Greenwood.

Mr. Prater was born March 17, 1931, in Wilkinson County, the son of David and Malinda McFarland Prater. He was an Alcorn State University business major. Mr. Prater was employed with Mississippi Valley State University as the manager of the campus laundry and cleaners. He was retired. He attended New Zion Baptist Church in Natchez. He was a member of the board of directors for Greenwood Hospital. He enjoyed greyhound dog races and all professional sports.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Carrie McDonald Prater; daughters, Helen Rose Johnson of Houston, Texas, Carla McDaniel Stewart of Chicago, Ill., and Jacqueline Jones of Jackson; nephews, Johnny Irving and wife, Marie, of Las Vegas and Charles Prater of Los Angeles; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Charles Berry, Joseph Conrad and Ira Jackson Jr.

Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Prater and Johnny Irving.
