VIDALIA — For the fourth time in less than a year a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle on Concordia Parish roads Wednesday.

Joe Turner, 56, was either pushing a stroller or holding a 2-year-old girl when he was struck in the leg by a 2000 Dodge Ram truck on Sage Road in Vidalia, according to a press release from Louisiana State Police.

Turner sustained serious injuries and the child suffered scrapes and bruises.

The truck was driven by John Smith, 40, of Ferriday. Alcohol is not suspected but tests will be a part of routine investigation, Trooper Mark Dennis said in the release. No one was ticketed or arrested in connection with the incident.

Turner was transported to a Jackson hospital for treatment.

The accident occurred at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The latest pedestrian crash comes after a string of three deaths on U.S. 84 in Concordia Parish.

Martha Cupit, 50, was killed last month near Camelot Leisure Living. The driver of the vehicle was charged with vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated.

In January, Parnell “Joe” Bowman, 54, was killed on Carter Street in Vidalia near the Family Dollar. He was crossing the street with a grocery basket.

A few days later, Ernell Hargrove, 67, was killed while riding his bike near the Vidalia Wal-Mart.

Vidalia authorities have said the major highway through town makes the area dangerous for pedestrians.
