NATCHEZ — Drew Kossum, the Natchez resident hurt most severely in a natural gas fire June 6, is in stable condition, a family member said.

Kossum, 21, is being treated at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga., Leinda Peterman, Kossum’s aunt, said.

“He’s still in critical care,” Peterman said. “He’s doing OK, but he’s heavily sedated. He was in a drug-induced coma for several days.”

Kossum was flown to the burn center after he and two other Natchez workers were injured when an Amite County natural gas well caught fire.

He has been through several surgeries and had to use a significant amount of blood — an average of 10 pints for each of the three or four surgeries.

That’s why the family is requesting Miss-Lou residents donate blood for Kossum at a blood drive Tuesday and Wednesday.

Tuesday, residents can donate blood at First Baptist Church, and Wednesday, they can donate at Concordia Bank in Vidalia.

Kossum needs both whole blood and platelets, she said. Since platelet donation takes longer, donors should make an appointment at www.bloodhero.com.

A bank account on his behalf is set up at Concordia Bank. Those wanting to help can donate money at any of the bank branches.

For information on blood donation, send e-mails to donatefordrew@hotmail.com.

For information on monetary donations, call Concordia Bank at 601-442-9441.

Kossum probably won’t be back home for some time, Peterman said.

“He’s expected to be there for a number of weeks, probably several months. He’s seriously ill,” she said.

Already, support from the community has been overwhelming, she said.

“The family appreciates the support and well-wishes,” Peterman said. “They’re overwhelmed with the outpouring of support and want to express their appreciations. Keep up the prayers.”

Family members read Kossum letters and cards every day when they visit, Peterman said.

Cards may be sent to Drew Kossum, Joseph M. Still Burn Centers, Inc., c/o Sherry Videtto, 1220 George C. Wilson Drive, Augusta, GA 30909.
