Winning the series takes the team

Some Adams County youth just need a little help at the plate, that’s all.

It’s nothing a good designated hitter could not fix.

In Major League Baseball, the designated hitter could be, perhaps, one of the biggest points of contention between American League and National League fans.

You see, American League teams can designate a good batter to hit in place of the pitcher, a position that is generally weak at the plate.

For purists, the DH ruins the game’s flow. For the logical among us, it makes sense. If you need some help at the plate, find someone who can bat well.

That’s exactly what a new mentoring program aims to do for dozens of area youth who need some help at the plate of life.

Directed by former sheriff’s deputy Chuck Mayfield, the new program is aimed at helping children who have parents in jail.

On Saturday, would-be mentors were able to meet and mingle with the children in need of some help at a party at Duncan Park.

The need obviously exists and the new program seems to be a good grassroots effort to helping resolve the problems facing these young people and give them the leg-up they need to get on base.

“They just need someone else to step up to the plate,” said mentor Jeanine Wickham.
