NATCHEZ — Natchez gymnastics summer camp participants do not wear flip flops, they flip flop.
Natchez Gymnastics is hosting their 10th annual summer camp. Participants were taught the basics of gymnastics, as well as advanced skills.
“I think we all mastered cartwheels this week, and we got to try out some more advanced moves,” camp director Kim Strawbridge said.
The camp had 24 participants and out of those about 95 percent will enroll in fall classes, Strawbridge said.
“We are practically here 24/7, it’s my favorite activity,” participant Morgan Pentcost said.
The young gymnasts said they learned a basic foundation and were challenged by harder drills and moves.
“We got to try out different drills and got help with back tucks and aerials,” participant Taylor Ham said.
The camp goers were excited to have an outlet for their energy.
“I love gymnastics and I was bored this summer,” Crain said.
The class was for kids with no experience to girls with several years of experience. The drills were designed to suit any level of knowledge.
“I have been tumbling for a couple of years, my mom taught me how,” participant Ann Ward said.
The camp taught the girls a dance in which they incorporated jumps they learned during the week. They learned exercises on the barrel, bars, beam, track, floor and cheese mats.
Many of the participants and assistants had taken the camp before, but saw a lot of improvement.
“A lot of us are doing a lot better than we were at the beginning of the week,” Sanders said.
The camp will be supplemented with a cheerleading camp next week.
“The objective for this camp is for the children to have a great time in a safe and joyful time in a stress-free environment.”
The cheerleading camp will use some of the fundamentals taught this week along with new material.
The cheer camp will be open to any ability level.
