TUPELO, Miss. (AP) — An Alcorn County couple wanted by police in connection with the death their 5-year-old granddaughter has been arrested in Tennessee.
Jimmy and Gloria Long of Corinth are accused in the death of Leah Woods. The child, who lived in Pensacola, Fla., with her mother, was visiting her grandparents when she became ill on Feb. 22 and later died.
In February, Alcorn County 911 received a call saying the child was unresponsive. She was flown by medical helicopter to University of Alabama Hospital at Birmingham. The child died at the hospital and authorities suspected something other than natural causes had killed her.
An Alabama coroner said the child died as a result of ingesting Elavil, a prescription antidepressant drug also used as a sleep aid. It wasn’t until May that autopsy results confirmed that the child died from taking the drug.
After an arrest warrant was issued for the Longs, Alcorn County Sheriff Jimmy Taylor said, the two fled. They were arrested Saturday in Humboldt, Tenn.
Leah’s mother, Crystal Clark, said investigators notified her Saturday that the two had been apprehended, according to a www.djournal.com article.
“I’m glad they’ve been caught,” said Clark. “I hope they aren’t allowed to bond out so they can run again.”
The case will be presented to the grand jury in August. The sheriff has said charged could be upgraded from felony child abuse to murder.
