NATCHEZ — The numbers from Memorial Day’s Click-it or Ticket campaign say success, local law enforcement officers said.

The crackdown on seat belts the week before and the week after the holiday weekend resulted in a flurry of citations.

Police officers, sheriff’s deputies and highway patrolmen joined forces from May 20 through June 3 to encourage people to be safe over the holidays by buckling up.

Natchez Police increased their focus on seat belts and issued dozens more tickets than average.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office created roadblocks at places around the county during those two weeks, catching drivers for offenses from seat belt violations to stolen vehicles.

Most of the violators, however, were let off with warnings, Chief Deputy Charles Sims said.

“We wanted to alert people and encourage them to be safe,” Sims said.

The sheriff’s office issued 143 tickets, 88 of which were for seat-belt violations. Deputies made 14 arrests for felonies and recovered one stolen vehicle.

Officials from both offices deemed the operation a success.

“But you can’t really tell how successful you’ve been” at getting people to wear seat belts, Police Chief Mike Mullins said. It will take looking at seat belt citation numbers months down the road to see if the operation had a lasting impact.

As for the upcoming holiday, law enforcement often takes a stronger stance on drunk driving during the Fourth of July holiday, Sheriff Ronny Brown said.
