VIDALIA — For those who like a lot of offense in a baseball game, the game between the Winnsboro 9- and 10-year-old All-Stars and the Ferriday 9- and 10-year-old All-Stars Sunday night at the Minor League Sub-District 5 Tournament was just right.
What had been a close game for the first two innings turned out to be a slugfest as Winnsboro advanced in the winner’s bracket with a 23-16 win over Ferriday and will take on Vidalia today at 8 p.m.
And even though Vidalia is hosting the tournament, its All-Star team will be the visiting team. Ferriday will take on the loser of the Vidalia-Winnsboro game Tuesday at 6 p.m. in an elimination game.
At the end of the fourth inning Winnsboro had what appeared to be a commanding lead at 16-7. But after Winnsboro was surprisingly held scoreless in the top of the fifth inning, Ferriday got back in the game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to trail 16-11.
But any thoughts of a come-from-behind win by Ferriday quickly ended when Winnsboro responded with seven runs in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Ferriday tried to rally again in the bottom of the sixth, but the five runs it scored wasn’t enough.
Peyton Jones, Austyn Davis and Seth Monnin each hit home runs for Winnsboro.
