MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One day in AAA, one day in Memphis, the first at bat and one home run — the Fourth of July couldn’t get much better for Vidalia native Jarrett Hoffpauir.

Hoffpauir got the phone call Tuesday that he’d be moving from his AA Springfield, Texas, team to the Memphis Redbirds. He hopped in the car Wednesday, arrived at 5 p.m. and went in during the eighth inning as a pinch hitter.

Now he’s batting 1.000 with two RBI.

“He wasn’t expecting to get to play today,” Hoffpauir’s father Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. “The dust hadn’t settled out of his car yet; he’d just driven in.”

Jarrett Hoffpauir batted again in the ninth, drawing a walk.

The Redbirds lost to Albuquerque 12-7.

Hoffpauir played baseball at Vidalia High School and the University of Southern Mississippi.
