NATCHEZ — The Union Baptist Church had a fun-filled celebration for its 70th year anniversary on April 26, 27 and 29.
This was the place to be if you were spirit-filled, love praising, worshipping and fellowshipping.
The message was “Building on the Rock.” In the message given by the Rev. Wayne Brady and the Rev. Walter “Butch” Cubie of Chicago, we were reminded that the rock to build on is “Jesus Christ.”
If we trust, believe, have faith and remain devoted to the rock, no evil will form against us. In times of trials, tribulations, grief or whatever the situation may be, always remember Jesus Christ is the rod and staff that brings us comfort. Only Jesus can care enough to hear all of our burdens.
The Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church Choir sang songs of praise such as: “I’m coming Lord,” “It’s Raining,” and “Jesus, Jesus.”
Arthur “Peedy” Johnson entertained the audience with his dynamic musical style which sends the young and old holy dancing and singing.
Sunday the congregation prepared a meal of fried catfish, potato salad, peas, rolls and cake to symbolize a country church with an uptown spirit and appetite to please minds, hearts and stomachs of its worshippers in the Miss-Lou.
The ministerial staff is the Rev. Carl Smith, the Rev. Willie Coulston, Evangelist Eva Banks and Rev. E. Cain along with Deacons Kyle Cubie, Edward Cubie, James Knight, Melvin Knight, Thaddeus Singleton, Jeffrey Banks Sr. and Arthur Johnson. These men have molded Union into a full-time place of worship and out reach ministry to our community.
The church still stands hardships and has only had three pastors in its 70 years of existence. They were the Rev. Murphy Smith, the Rev. Fred Green, and our present pastor the Rev. Carl Smith of Natchez.
The congregation prays that God will continue to be the “Rock” we need for continued growth.
