Web feature is harmful to community

I am upset and offended by the recently added blog or reader comment feature of The Natchez Democrat online.

This feature has nothing to do with news and everything to do with gossip.

For years I have found the blog site misslousports.com to be at best a joke and at worst a harmful tool to spread rumors and lies.

I am horrified that my hometown newspaper has stooped to such tactics. The stream of comments left after the July 4 car accident that resulted in the deaths of three young people from this area demonstrates perfectly why a blog feature should not be part of a small community newspaper.

Perhaps blogs represent the latest fad for online newspapers, but I hope that The Natchez Democrat can avoid sinking to the level of the lowest common denominator.

I challenge the newspaper to reconsider this technological innovation and remove it from the Web site.

There are many online sites where people can go to blog, but very few where they can go to be sure of reading the news reported in a reliable and responsible way.

Make The Natchez Democrat online one of those places. Remove the blog feature.
