SUMMIT — Marquis Lewis hit a grand slam home run during a five-run rally in the bottom of the second inning as the McComb 12-year-old All-Star rallied to defeat Natchez 10-6 Saturday afternoon.

McComb tied the best-of-three series at one game apiece, then won the coin toss and will host the third and deciding game Monday at 6:30 p.m. at either McComb or Summit.

Natchez got off to a good start with four runs in the top of the first inning off starting pitcher Jesse Travis. Unfortunately, all Natchez got after that was a couple of solo home runs off reliever and winning pitcher Jacob Fleming.

“McComb (specifically Travis) had control problems. They walked the bases loaded and we winded up with four runs,” Natchez head coach Gus Perry said.

However, that lead would not last very long. Costly errors and Lewis’s first home run of the game, a three-run shot, allowed McComb to tie the game in the bottom of the first inning.

“They came to bat and hit the ball very well,” Perry said. “Wind up having to pull our starting pitcher, Andrew Moroney. He pitched well, but they were hitting it well.”

McComb took the lead for good with its five runs in the bottom of the second, capped by Lewis’s grand slam to make it a 9-4 game.

Daniel Huffines relieved Moroney and he, along with Tanner Martin did a good job of shutting down McComb’s offense.

Christopher Perry hit a solo home run to make it a 9-5 game in the top of the third inning, but Natchez didn’t score again until the top of the sixth on Moroney’s solo shot that cut McComb’s lead to 10-6. However, a double play ended the game.

McComb ended up with 15 hits while Natchez was held to just five hits in the game. Moroney went 2-for-3 for Natchez while five players for McComb had two hits.
