VIDALIA — Neither rain, sleep or mud could stop the 14 teams gathered to play in a marathon softball tournament to benefit Drew Kossum.
Kossum was severely burned when a gas well he was working on exploded on June 6.
“We had to do something for him and his family,” organizer Cathy Warren.
The tournament started Friday at 7:30 p.m. and continued through Saturday night.
“I made it all night,” Kristin Cox said. “This has been a blast.”
All proceeds from the tournament go straight to a Concordia Bank account in Kossum’s name.
“Everyone has been extremely generous in helping out,” Warren said. “There have been donations from everywhere.”
Teams from as far Alexandria, La., have come to participate in the benefit.
“We know a lot of the guys from this area,” Craig Fredieu said. “We have played in quite a few benefits before.”
The winners were first place Ken Whittington, second place the Amigos and third place Concordia Bank.
The teams and sponsors were the Amigos, Randy Freeman, The All-Stars, Jordan C., DynaSteel, Peter Burns, Sunshine, Drew’s Crew, Randy Maxwell, Swing A Way, Cox Family, Lakeside, Concordia Bank and Ken Whittington.
“We were able to raise right at $2,900,” Warren said. “We are thankful to everyone in the Miss-Lou that helped and volunteered their time to make this happen.”
Kossum is being treated at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga.
If anyone would like information on making a donation, Cathy Warren can be reached at 601-431-2755.
