SUMMIT — Daniel Huffines and Tanner Martin combined to pitch a one-hit shutout as the Natchez 12-year-old All-Stars defeated McComb 6-0 Monday night at the Windsor Gay Sports Complex.

Natchez won the District 6 District Championship series two games to one and will take on the District 5 runner-up Friday at 6 p.m. in the first game of the Mississippi Dixie Youth Major League South Regional Tournament at Laurel.

“They came out tonight with their minds on baseball,” Natchez head coach Gus Perry said. “Everybody was fired up. Andrew Moroney led off with a line drive, which of course was caught. Then Huffines hit a solo home run. We went 1 through 8 in the first inning. All the kids either got a hit or hit the ball hard.”

Huffines’s solo home run, the only extra-base hit for either team, helped Natchez jump out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. But unlike Game 2, when McComb rallied for nine unanswered runs in the first two innings, McComb’s offense was almost non-existent in this game.

“Our defense backed up our pitchers up,” Perry said. “When they put it in play, they made the plays. They came out with a lot of heart tonight.”

Huffines pitched the first four innings and gave up one hit and struck out one. Martin pitched the final two innings, allowing no hits while striking out two.

“Tanner came in in the fifth a little shaky, but the defense helped him out,” Perry said. “Then he went 3-up and 3-down in the sixth.”

Sky Logan went 1-for-3 with two runs batted in and Kyle Bradley was 1-for-3 with one RBI. Tyler Duncan and Cody Rhinehart each had one hit for Natchez.
