WESSON — After three straight rain delays and a two-day break, the first day of the Mississippi Dixie Youth 11-year-olds District 6 District Tournament finally got under way.

Unfortunately, the Natchez All-Stars didn’t end up with the outcome they were hoping for as the Lincoln County defeated them 15-5 in five innings Tuesday afternoon.

Natchez will take on Franklin County in an elimination game today at 6:30 p.m. at Carroll-Jones Field Franklin County lost to McComb.

“We were up 1-0 in the top of the first and we were only down 3-1 after one inning,” Natchez coach Bruce Ross said. “Then we had problems throwing strikes. They would get a few walks and a bloop single. They really didn’t crush the ball.”

Tyler Buckles gave Natchez its 1-0 lead with a solo home run. Three of Natchez’s remaining four runs came off the bat of Garrett Rehms, who homered in the top of the fourth inning.

The Lincoln Americans scored nine runs in the bottom of the second inning to give them a 12-2 lead. They would add three more runs in the game to 10-run rule Natchez.

Ross said the long wait hurt the team’s pitching more than its hitting.

“You just practice so much with the rain. Not playing any games in a while, it affects your pitching,” Ross said. “We just wasn’t as sharp. It’s just frustrating. Everyone had to overcome the weather.”
