MCCOMB — Thanks to a pair of five-run innings, the Natchez 9-year-old All-Stars rolled to a 12-4 win over the Lincoln County Americans Tuesday night at the District 6 District Tournament at Edgewood Park.
With the win, Natchez advanced to the today’s championship series. However, Natchez would not know its opponent until later in the night because the McComb-Wesson game didn’t get under way until shortly after 9 p.m.
If McComb wins, Natchez would have to win twice to win the district championship. The first game will take place at 6 p.m. and the second game, if necessary, will be at 8 p.m. However, if Wesson upsets McComb, all three teams would have one loss and would draw to determine which team gets the bye, with the first game at 6 p.m. and the championship game at 8 p.m.
Natchez scored three runs in the first inning and then broke the game open with five runs in the second inning. Natchez also scored five runs in the fourth inning to end any thoughts of a comeback by the Lincoln County.
“The kids came out to play ball,” Natchez head coach Leroy Myles said. “And my assistant coaches, Robert Myles and Terry Moffett, did a wonderful job coaching them on the field.”
Skeeter Myles went 2-for-2 with a double and a triple and Andrew Beesley was also 2-for-2 for the Natchez All-Stars. Head coach Myles noted that the team hit the ball a lot better Tuesday night than it did in its 12-2 loss to McComb on Monday.
“They didn’t hit the ball at all against McComb, but they all hit the ball well tonight. My defense was excellent tonight. They played like they should have all season. I don’t know what happened between the McComb game and this one.”
