DENHAM SPRINGS, La. (AP) — The Amite River has lost six miles of its length because of erosion, and the channel has become more shallow.
That’s according to a new study by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The 2,200-square-mile Amite River drainage basin curls through southwestern Mississippi and southeastern Louisiana.
Jason McCrossen is heading a study to look at improving the river’s water quality.
He says — quoting here — The river has done a lot of straightening out over the years — end quote —
The study could lead to an environmental restoration project that corps officials say would improve water quality and increase fish and wildlife habitat.
