TWENTY YEARS AGO — After a first-round bye, Joel Lessley gets by a stubborn Leon Ridley, 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 9-7 to advance to the semifinals of the Men’s Open division of the Natchez City Tennis Championships at the Duncan Park Tennis Courts.

TEN YEARS AGO — Josh Hoffpauir is named to the AAU All-Tournament Team after the Baton Rouge team he plays for wins the national title with a 7-4 win over Southwest Florida. Hoffpauir goes 3-for-4 in the game and ends up batting 13-for-23 with two home runs.

FIVE YEARS AGO — Natchez High’s Janice Davis wins the Gatorade Mississippi Track and Field Player of the Year award for the second straight year, joining Mike Bibby, Tim Dwight, Randy Moss and Marion Jones as the only athletes to be named Gatorade Player of the Year more than once.
