NATCHEZ — With a full ballot, there are few uncontested county races on Tuesday’s ballot. But those running uncontested, all incumbents, said they have a passion for the job.

Chancery Clerk Tommy O’Beirne said he chose to run for reelection because he enjoys working with people.

“I genuinely like to work with the public and I enjoy my job,” O’Beirne said.

For 20 years, he has served as chancery clerk, working with the court, the county supervisors and other offices.

O’Beirne said if people considered him a successful clerk, he certainly had help.

“I have dedicated and talented (deputy) clerks that make my office efficient.”

Overall, he said he wanted to do what he could to help the residents in whatever way he could.

“I hope what I do in office benefits the county,” he said.

County Attorney Barrett Martin said although his job isn’t a high-profile position, he loves it.

“I enjoy the challenge of it and the people I work with on a regular basis,” Martin said. “It’s always made me feel at the end of the day like I did something good and that maybe it even mattered.”

Although serving as prosecutor for the county can be exhausting, tackling thousands of cases every year, it’s worthwhile, he said.

“It’s one of those opportunities attorneys get from time to time to participate in the system and go home with a sincere feeling of respect for the law,” he said.

Northern District Constable Ray Brown said he enjoyed doing his part to help Adams County residents.

“It’s being in the community, being visible and being able to help out in an y way I can in any legal aspect,” Brown said. “I have been there for them and will be in the future.”

Constables act as law enforcement officers for the county, often delivering summons for the court. They can even write tickets.

“We have the same power other law enforcement officers have,” Brown said. “We are officers of the court.”

Southern District Constable Randy Freeman, too, said he felt a sense of satisfaction in his job.

“I took this job mainly because I wanted to help others,” he said. “I campaign on the fact that if anybody needs me, I will be there to help.”

Although people are not often happy to see him on their doorsteps, he still enjoys the job.

“You don’t ever know (what’s going to happen” from one day to the next,” he said.
