NATCHEZ — Starting this week, the Natchez Post Office lobby was again open for business 24 hours a day.

After burglars reportedly broke into parcel lockers in the lobby, the post office started closing the lobby when they closed the office, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

State postal inspectors agreed the lobby should be reopened at its old hours, Postmaster Bill Farrior said.

“We have a lot of customers who work out of town and can’t access their mailboxes except after hours,” Farrior said.

“I told (the inspectors) that a lot of customers were disenchanted with our decision to close the lobby. They agreed to go ahead and open the lobby 24 hours.”

The post office has put a few new security measures in place, he said.

“We’ve got cameras, video equipment and some other stuff I’m not at liberty to say,” Farrior said.

No arrests have been made in connection with the July 18 burglary or post office box vandalisms the week before, Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said.

Mullins said he did not have a problem with the post office lobby opening 24 hours again.

“We’ve had very few problems at the post office over the years,” Mullins said.

Still, anyone with information on the case should contact the police. A cash reward is available for information through Crime Stoppers at 601-442-5000.

Farrior said he was optimistic about reopening the lobby fulltime.

The post office will no longer put parcels in the lockers for the near future, he said.

“The only thing they can possibly break into is the P.O. boxes, and we’re taking a chance for the sake of our customers that it won’t happen again,” Farrior said. “If it does happen again, we don’t know what’s going to happen. Hopefully, whoever did this will decide not to do it again.”
